Minamata was a disaster from mercury poisoning. Minamata is located in the town of Kumamoto it is on the west cost of Kyūshū. The city has a population of 27,856 in the city of minamata.
In the 1930s no one would know that this massive disaster would hit this lovely town of minamata. It was in the bay that it happened. This mercury spill was never known about until the 1950s which is a long time to have mercury in the town and nobody knew about who was to blame? Why didn’t this town know about? People started to die so the stared calling it the minamata disaster but it was mercury poisoning.

The mercury poisoning was originally called the minamata disease some of the symptoms was numbness in there hands
and feet, the muscles would started to weaken, blurred vision and speech. In really bad craziness, paralysis, coma and death would follow. The mercury poisoning would sometimes effect the fetes form the womb. Mercury poisoning is highly dangers after a long time it starters killing parts of your body of. There were 2,265 victims had been officially recognised but 1,784 of who had died.
It stared to have a impact on the economy because the fish started to float in the minamata bay at the same time cats stared doing crazy stuff like falling into the sea and drying it was called “cat suicides”. The government didn’t do anything to help these people they just left them to find out for themselves . if it wasn’t for Researchers from Kumamoto University this mercury poisoning could off killed a lot of people.
How did it happen? Who or what caused the disaster?
The disaster was caused by the Chisso factory. They knew that this could have a very big effect on the environment. They knew that they were prime suspect in the Minamata disease but they didn’t care. This only happened because they were dumping there poison in the beautiful water ways.

Why did it happen?
This happen because of Chisso Factory were to lazy to find out about the effects that could happen to people and the environment. After they find out they tried to cover it up.
What has been done to fix the problem? Was this the best solution to the problem?
They installed wastewater treatment systems at the factory. The best way to fix the problem was to not to put it in the water in the first place but this was a good idea to fix what they had done in the first place. They should of find out what was in the chemical in the first place.
